Not simply passing through on our way somewhere else, barely noticing a thing, but actually stopping, looking up, following a street just because something about it caught our attention.

We’ve lived or worked here for years and, perhaps because of that, we’ve stopped seeing it. We walk down Rua Augusta with the familiarity and automatic ease of someone opening their own front door. But the Pombaline downtown was designed to be looked at: the orderly façades, the arches, the tiles nobody notices while rushing to catch the tram. On an October day, with the light falling at a lower angle and the summer heat finally easing, it asks for exactly that: a walk with nowhere in particular to go.

The walk

Start without a plan. Leave Praça da Figueira and let the perpendicular streets guide you: Augusta, Prata, Ouro. Each one still carrying its old trade in its name, even if what is sold there today has long since changed. Notice the door numbers, the chipped tiles nobody ever restored and which somehow became more beautiful because of it. Walk up towards Rossio and stop for a few seconds to look at the pattern of the Portuguese pavement, that stone sea we cross every day without really seeing it.

If you have time, pass by the Santa Justa Lift. Not necessarily to go up, as the queue is often enough to put you off, but to admire its neo-Gothic iron structure from below, slightly out of place among the Pombaline buildings, which is part of its charm. Then head down towards Rua dos Correeiros and allow yourself to get distracted: a shop window, an unexpected view, a conversation between neighbours who have been here for decades. The point isn’t to tick things off a list. It’s simply to notice.

A pause at the table

After walking, sitting down feels good. At Elevador — Cervejaria da Baixa, on the ground floor of Hotel Santa Justa, the table follows the same logic as the walk: Portuguese and Galician food, made to be shared slowly.
It almost always begins with starters, that moment when the table fills with small plates and the conversation hasn’t quite reached its peak yet. Then comes the fish, faithful to an Atlantic tradition Portugal and Galicia have shared for centuries: simple, properly handled, allowed to speak for itself. And for those who prefer meat, there is always something that tastes familiar, like Sunday lunch, like something made the way it has always been made.

It’s the kind of meal that doesn’t need too many adjectives. It tastes good because it’s honest and unmistakably ours.

The invitation

October in Lisbon has one advantage: the days still make us want to walk, only without the weight of summer. Set aside an afternoon. It doesn’t have to be Sunday. Any ordinary Wednesday will do. And try being a tourist in your own city.
Walk through downtown Lisbon without rushing, notice what you’ve never noticed before and finish, as tradition demands, sitting around a table. At Elevador, the door is open and the table is always set.

How long has it been since we wandered through downtown Lisbon as if we were discovering it for the first time?
